LET IT BE KNOWN – SUBJECT: Endorsement and Support of the Veteran Hearing Awareness Forum on February 7, 2015.

At the November 20, 2014 Sarasota County Veterans Commission meeting, a presentation was offered by Ms. JoAnne DeVries, President of the Hearing Loss Association of America – Sarasota/Manatee chapter. Ms. DeVries outlined plans for the Veteran Hearing Loss Awareness Forum, hosted by the HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee chapter. There are approximately 88,000 veterans in Sarasota/Manatee counties and, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine; one out of five people (17,600 veterans) have some degree of hearing loss. The situation has become even more immediate since many veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have hearing loss and tinnitus.

The Veteran Hearing Awareness Forum is a free event for veterans and families affected by hearing loss. The Forum will feature a “Conversation with Veterans” who will discuss the challenges of hearing loss, share how their hearing loss experiences impact them, their families and friends, and provide insightful and successful life-style focused solutions. The latest information on technology, services, and communication strategies will be shared. Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided to all attendees; door prizes will also be available.
Ms. Devries stated that HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee is committed to helping people live successfully with hearing loss, and believes veterans will benefit from the education and access services her organization offers.
In closing, Ms. DeVries requested the endorsement, support and assistance from the Sarasota County Veterans Commission. A motion was made to endorse and support the Veteran Hearing Awareness Forum and the commission membership voted in favor of Endorsing and Supporting this important event.
